This means students may bring special snacks and drinks (peanut free) on the east day for the party. The kids know they can bring snacks for just themselves or bring enough for their table mates or bring something for the whole class. Of course if everyone brought something for the whole class that would be too much. Thanks.

Spelling: Print the list words three times (in three neat columns) and pick five words to use in five separate sentences. This is due Friday. Today we talked about our past lessons on using quotation marks. So I am expecting this week that all five sentences will contain quotation marks to set apart something that someone is saying or thinking. e.g., Jimmy's mom stood in front of the doorway to his bedroom and sternly exclaimed, "No screen time until your homework is done!"  Of course they could also be to indicate a title of a song, book, movie, etc. e.g., On the weekend Mr. v went to the IMAX theatre to see "Avengers: Infinity War". Please remember the spelling dictation (quiz) on Friday.

List #15 Words:

Green: note, send, rest, test, tent, does, done, dice, trout, scout, rice, dust

SNOW and ICE DAY: No busses

No Spelling this week. Not because it was a snow day but because I had a deal with the kids that if their spelling form the previous week was not marked on the weekend they get to have a week off of spelling. Since I was away for appointments on Friday I didn't get the books to mark.

Math: ÷3 tomorrow. Since the students did not get to do their quiz on Friday it is rescheduled to tomorrow. I will push the ÷4 quiz to next week as a result.

Special Notes:

• Yearbook orders are due this Thursday. This will be the ABSOLUTE last day they will be sold.

• This is Earth Week. Time to be GREEN (as we always should be). This week we are having a 'Plastic Bag Grab Challenge'. Students are encouraged to bring in as many plastic bags as they can for recycling. The class that brings in the most (by weight) will win a class set of reusable 'strawberry' shopping bags.

• Today's Earth week challenge is "Meatless Monday". Families are encouraged to go meatless. There is a long explanation for why this is a real thing that affect are environment. The short story is: the more meat we eat (like beef), the more cows we need, and cows toot gasses like methane which are greenhouse gasses which contribute to global warming. No joke.

• Tomorrow is "Trash-less Tuesday".

Speech or Oral Presentation preparation and practice. Speeches and OPs start THURSDAY.

Math: we will likely have a quiz tomorrow so go over those number facts from 1x0=0 to 7x7=49. I don't expect the kids to have all of those memorized yet so use arrays to solve when necessary.

Spelling Dictation books: any errors from the last two lists should be corrected five times each at the back of the book. Please also sign the last two dictations. These are due Friday.

Special Notes:

• Some students have not yet returned the Skating form. Please sign and return it to school. Your child is running out of time if they have not brought it in yet.

• Please let Mr. v know if you have extra skates and/or helmets that can be lent to other students. Thanks!! Please also let Mr. v know if your child does not have skates and or a hemet they can use.

• Please remember that Swim to Survive this week is tomorrow. Don't forget swim suits, towels, and socks.

No Spelling this week because of speeches/OPs

Speech or Oral Presentation preparation and practice. Speeches and OPs start THURSDAY so hopefully the kids are practising.

Math: p. 93 due tomorrow

Practise the 4-times (4x) tables for an upcoming quiz. Students will have to recall in random order the number facts from 4x0=0 to 4x12=48. Technically they only need to know up to 4x7=28 but I am doing the rest for an extra challenge. They will only be marked for the ones up to 4x7=28.

Spelling Dictation books: any errors from the last two lists should be corrected five times each at the back of the book. Please also sign the last two dictations. These are due Friday.

Special Notes:

• Some students have not yet returned the Skating form. Please sign and return it to school. If your child will not be skating it would be nice if you could still sign the form and return it with a little note about not skating. I want to be sure all the parents are aware. Thanks. Regardless, all students will travel to the rink and non-skaters will read a book while we are there.

• Please let Mr. v know if you have extra skates and/or helmets that can be lent to other students. Thanks!! Please also let Mr. v know if your child does not have skates and or a hemet they can use.

• Please remember that Swim to Survive this week is Wednesday, not tomorrow.

Friday, February 2

Speech or Oral Presentation preparation and practice. Speeches and OPs start NEXT WEEK so hopefully the kids are practising.

PLEASE NOTE: Only half my students have brought in their speech forms signed by a parent indicating their topic and wether they are doing a speech or oral presentation. That was due last week. Also, at least that many have not shown me their speech yet. That was due this week. This has never happened before so I am rather confused by it. If this is your child, he or she is running out of time.

Spelling Dictation books went home yesterday. Any errors from the last two lists should be corrected five times each at the back of the book. Please also sign the last two dictations. These are not due back until next Thursday.

Special Notes:

• Many students have not yet returned the Skating form. Please sign and return it to school. If your child will not be skating it would be nice if you could still sign the form and return it with a little note about not skating. I want to be sure all the parents are aware. Thanks. Regardless, all students will travel to the rink and non-skaters will read a book while we are there.

SNOW DAY!!! What a way to start the new year! 😮

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Friday, December 22

Merry Christmas everybody!! Thank you so much for the nice gifts I received. I hope your child finds a place for the gift I gave them. I have given a thank you card to each of the kids who brought me a gift but I told them to share it with the parent who helped them get the gift. Thanks again so much if they forget to do that. Sorry to the couple of families who picked their child up early. I didn't think to give them their card early. 😳 Have a blessed, safe and happy holiday everyone!! 😀

Read: anything! Library books, magazines, internet articles, comics, instructions, recipes, etc.

Special Notes:

There is a very important Upper Canada Village Grade 3 trip not and form coming home today. Please read it carefully. It is coming home before Christmas to give families advanced notice of a $30 deposit needed towards the end of January.

• The students have successfully earned a double bonus for good behaviour and hard work. That means, for this special season only, they have earned a movie party for Friday. Students may bring in snacks and drink. Do not send un-popped popcorn to school. Pre-popped is great. Students may bring something for themselves, their table or the whole class if they wish.

BUSES ARE CANCELLED!!! 😮

That means our class play is cancelled too! I'll let you know later today if we can reschedule it. 😕

UPDATE:

We have rescheduled the play in our classroom to 2:15 tomorrow. We look forward to seeing you if you can make it in. Students can leave early with their parents after the play if parents would like. Students: if you did not leave your costume in the classroom please remember to bring it tomorrow.

Monday, December 18

There will be no Spelling this week.

Drama: Well the play is tomorrow and there are still some kids who don't really know their lines. It's now or never... their classmates are counting on them.  Please practise tonight to make sure lines are memorized and they know what line comes before theirs (so they know when to sat their part).  Please work on being able to say them loudly, smoothly, slowly (many are rushing), and clearly. Thanks!

Read: anything! Library books, magazines, internet articles, comics, instructions, recipes, etc.

Special Notes:

• Again (last time you have to see this), there will be a short play in our classroom tomorrow at 12:15. We may follow that with a few Christmas carols. If you are free you may wish to join us but because of the small of room we will need to limit guests to 1-2 per child. It will be nice to see you there but it will be short and small-scale so don't feel pressured to take time off work. There is a chance of freezing rain early in the morning in Gan tomorrow. It likely won't amount to anything but please remember that if busses are cancelled the class play is cancelled as well.

• There is a note going home with the youngest and only about the Christmas lunch on Wednesday.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Friday, December 15

Drama: Memorize your lines for the play! For some reason there seems to be a lot of kids not really working on this. It's why I didn't assign spelling... so they could focus on this! It's really important the kids know their lines and when they have to say them. Please try to find some time this weekend to memorize and to be able to say them loud and and clear. Thanks!

Read: anything! Library books, magazines, internet articles, comics, instructions, recipes, etc.

Special Notes:

• Please consider a donation for Interval House (see the letter that went home earlier with the reverse Advent Calendar).

Thursday, December 14

Math: p. 76

Drama: Practise and memorize your lines for the play

Practise the 2-times (2x) tables for a quiz tomorrow. Students will have to recall in random order the number facts from 2x0=0 to 2x12=24. Technically they only need to know up to 2x7=14 but I am doing the rest for an extra challenge. They will only be marked for the ones up to 2x7=14. Students will need to get in the habit of practising every night in order to have success with the larger numbers. Starting in January they will need to learn the 3x tables, then the 4x tables and so on. I can not stress enough the importance of learning and memorizing these number facts for their future success in mathematics. Please encourage your children to practice frequently and challenge them with pop-quizzes as often as you are able. We will of course look at many strategies for multiplication but memorizing the facts is the ultimate goal.

Spelling Dictation book: please sign the page that has the last dictation (Lis #7). On the very last page of the book they should print List #7 and under that print any spelling mistakes they made on the quiz five times each (unless I have stated they do less) in a column or on a line. This is due Friday.

Special Notes:

• There will be a short play in our classroom on Tuesday, December 19th at 12:15. We may follow that with a few Christmas carols. If you are free you may wish to join us but because of the small of room we will need to limit guests to 1-2 per child. It will be nice to see you there but it will be short and small-scale so don't feel pressured to take time off work.

• Please consider a donation for Interval House (see the letter that went home earlier with the reverse Advent Calendar).

Drama: Practise and memorize your lines for the play

Practise the 2-times (2x) tables for a quiz on Friday. This is how we are arranging the numbers when we use regrouping (carrying for addition or borrowing for subtraction). Hopefully your child copied the first question (a) in each number as a sample/demonstration.

Special Notes:

• Tomorrow is Orange and Black day for Halloween. Students can wear orange and black to get into the Halloween Spirit. This is optional of course.

• Scholastic book orders for November come home today. They are due November 10th. Thanks for supporting your child's literacy skills development as well as our classroom resources. ☺️

• Some time ago your child brought home a note explaining how we will migrate from this yolasite website to our new "Channels" in Teams in Office 365. If you haven't already done so, please read the note and sign into Teams with your child's email/login. I have been getting some feedback and clearly there will be some growing pains for some but school-home communication is essential so please take the time to login and explore.

***I am now aware of the issue relating to parents who have logged in with another child who's class is already part of another team. I figured out a work-around. I am going to add your child's sibling to my list so that you can click on the button that says "Add Team". Start typing "Mr. v Grade 3" and you will see our team pop up. Select it and you should now have access to all your children's teams. Please let me know if that works for you.

**** If for some reason your child of another class has been missed please let me know in an email: mikev900@me.com

Thanks for your patience! 😊

And PLEASE use the "chat" feature to send me a text and open a line of communication with me. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks again! 😃

THIS IS THE DAY!!

Today you will get a note home with your child explaining the transition from this website to "Teams" on Microsoft Office 365 as the main source of communication between the teacher and parents. While it is your child that is being logged in my expectation is that it is the parents that will you use it and students will access it with supervision as apposed to on their own.

Everything is explained on the note. It is rather lengthy but hopefully it will be clear how you download the app and get logged in If you just won't read it all (please do) the last page is just about the features that I will be using in Teams. At least follow the instructions on the first page or two to get logged in.

I have had to work through some glitches and imperfections in the system so please send me your feedback as to how it is all working for you and of course what is not working.

I will maintain this homework page on this site (you now will need to visit "Teams" to get the Plog Challenge... and there is already one uploaded to that site) for a short while as we transition. However, as the board has told us to shut such sites down I will have to discontinue it soon.

So again please useyour child's login (which is an email address) to access Teams ASAP. This will be THE main form of communication so I really need everyone to try to get access to our Classroom "Team". Thank you so much for your cooperation with this. Please don't hesitate to send me an email if I can help get through any issues that may come up.  mikev900@me.com

A reminder - Reading: I have been talking to my kids about the importance of daily reading. I do not consider this homework. They should read for enjoyment and the improvement in literacy skills will be a side benefit. They will become better readers with practise and they will become better writers too. Vocabulary and even creativity will improve. Picture books, magazines, chapter books, newspapers, internet articles... read anything and everything that is age appropriate. As parents you will want to help your child find the right balance of material that is not too difficult as that can cause frustration and negativity but that also challenges your young reader as they master the skill and need to broaden their horizons.

Special Notes:

• WEBSITE ISSUES: Sorry if you have been having issues accessing this website lately. I was alerted last night by a parent and two more mentioned it at the Cross Country meet today. Apparently some users are getting a warning about this site note been safe to visit and that personal information may be at risk. Coincidentally I attended a 'webinar' last nighton Office 365 (the only board-recommended method of communication) and will now attempt to fast-track our transition from yola to that platform. Please be patient with me as I attempt to get that up and running ASAP. I will soon send your child's board login and the site to access. You will be granted licensing for up to 5 devices that you can download Office 365 to in order to resume uninterrupted and safe communication between home and the classroom. Sorry for any inconvenience this is currently causing.

• Picture orders are due back on October 19th.

Friday, September 29

We had a great day at the Cross Country Meet in Elgin today. I'm so proud of the runners from my class. They were awesome!!

However, our bus was almost an hour late picking us up and we barely made it back for the busses from the school. I didn't even see my class at the end of the day! So we missed our Spelling Dictation today. I was going to reschedule it for Monday but that's not ideal as the kids might not remember to practise there words on the weekend (after all, I did say I wouldn't normally assign weekend homework). Than I realized I wasn't here to collect the Spelling notebooks to mark this weekend. Now is a good time to tell you I have a new rule this year: If I don't get the Spelling notebooks marked on a weekend the kids get a spelling holiday the week after. So... No Spelling next week!!

That means we can postpone the Spelling dictation from today to next Friday. I'll make sure the kids understand on Monday. Have a great weekend!  🙂

Special Notes:

• Hopefully many families are making plans to attend our Fall Fun Fair tomorrow. Hope to see you there! 🙂

• Please remember: This is the LAST WEEKEND to shop for our Class Fall Fun Fair Fundraiser theme basket if you are able.  Our class theme is "Sweet Tooth" so please consider shopping for sweet treats for our basket. We've had a few cake mixes sent in so maybe we could focus on other items on the list (candy, chocolate, anything sweet!). Thanks to those who have already contributed. Please also try to send in the receipt from your purchase as we have to assign a value for the items in our basket for the auction. We need all items to be in by Monday, September 25th. Thanks so much for your assistance with our annual fundraiser.  ☺️

• Scholastic Book orders due next Friday, September 29th. This is voluntary of course but every order helps build the resources in the classroom. Our classroom has a tv, dvd player, many book shelves and books that were purchased with coupons from scholastic. The bigger our orders, the more coupons we get. So if you are planning to purchase books to help improve your child's literacy skills, you might wish to consider using the book orders as the whole classroom benefits from them. Thanks!

Spelling Dictation: tomorrow. This short quiz happens every Friday at the end of a Spelling week. The students should know how to spell the list words they copied down in to their Spelling notebooks on Monday. I reminded the kids every day but I'm not sure how many kids were actually taking the book home to practise.

Read: I have been talking to my kids about the importance of daily reading. I do not consider this homework. • Please check back to the previous days checklists. There are many notes, and forms, and such that need to be acted on or returned with a signature. Thanks!!

THE AGENDAS ARE HERE!!!!!   😃

Each child will bring home and agenda today. Please remember my request that the agenda be initialed each evening so I know you are aware of what's going on in your child's life at St. Joseph (wether it be notes, announcements, important dates, or maybe even an assignment). If you are too busy perhaps another grown up family member can do this?

Spelling: as I said this week we are doing the sentences entirely at school but I should have mentioned that there is a 'dictation' quiz on the Friday of every Spelling week (five day weeks) so it would be helpful if your child takes a bit of time to practice spelling their words. Perhaps a family member could try giving a practice quiz if there is any spare time.

Read: I have been talking to my kids about the importance of daily reading. I do not consider this homework. Monday, September 11

Spelling: We started our Making Big words Spelling program today. Please read the sheet glued into your child's spelling notebook. This is typically a homework assignment given on Monday and due Friday. This work may be completed in school but otherwise be completed at home. We already printed the three columns of words in advance and wrote down a sample sentence as a model for the kind of detail that is ideal. I will be having my students complete four more sentences for me at school so I can let them no what my expectations are. There is also information regarding optional challenge activities that the kids (or parents) can pick from if they want an extra challenge. No one is required by their teacher to do these activities. So really (in the future, not this week) your child has four nights to write five sentences. One or two sentences a night is not too bad! They might want to get them all over with at once.

List #1 Words:

Green: den, can, dent, sand, ten, sat, sad, tin, ant, sea

Blue: accidents, insect, dance, tea, idea, stand, stain, tied, said, candies

Please note. I have done a diagnostic assessment to assist in organizing students into groups based on which words they should be able to handle (Green or blue). However these lists are flexible. If students in the blue group are finding it too difficult they may want to drop back... if students in the green need more of a challenge they can try some of the Blue words.

Special Notes:

• If you have not done so already please remember to send in signed student information sheets, trip/use of picture permission forms, fall fundraiser volunteer forms (if interested), and school photo forms.

• Please remember to shop for our Class Fall Fun Fair Fundraiser theme basket if you are able.  Our class theme is "Sweet Tooth" so please consider shopping for sweet treats for our basket. • Please see the Fall Fun Fair Fundraiser Theme Basket note coming home today. Our class theme is "Sweet Tooth" so please consider shopping for sweet treats for our basket. Please also try to send in the receipt from your purchase as we have to assign a value for the items in our basket for the auction. We need all items to be in by Monday, September 25th. Thanks so much for your assistance with our annual fundraiser.  ☺️

• School photo forms went home with the youngest and only yesterday. Please return to the school.

There is a (blue) Fall Fun Fair Fundraiser note/volunteer form going home with each student that went home yesterday. Please fill out and return if you are able to help out.

• Cross Country notes wen home yesterday with the students that expressed an interest. Please return ASAP.
